Hello fellows

The M40b18 on my e30 is taking its last breath! Tapping noise is huge and it is burning oil. I don't know if it is from piston rings or threw valve leak. I must figure a solution...preferably, a cheap one, and i might have it but need your advice.
I have a deal on a 1993 e36 M40b16 engine. According to what I've read on e30wiki, they are the same. The only difference is the crankshaft. Please help me decide between the following two options:

1: take the head from the e36 M40b16, verify/change piston rings on my M40b18 and install the "new" head.

2. Take off the crankshaft of e30 M40b18, and install it on e36 M40b16 to make it M40b18. Is this possible? What else do I need to change?

Please inlight me with your knowledge

Greetings from Portugal! :)
