Ok so my 91 318is is probably going to need a new engine. Cracked the sump on a stupidly high speed bump and unfortunately it has ran its self dry of oil. Filled it up again just to hear if it was knocking and i can hear it coming in at about 2600 revs. Gutted!! It was very low miles for the year as well

Anyway.. As anyone got any ideas what I could do from here?
I want to keep the car, so should I try and find a used M42 or look at something bigger?

Swapping another M42 will obviously be easiest, but you could look at rebuilding yours, maybe a 2.0l M42 as it sounds like you're in the market for a new crank :(

Or do an M50/M52 swap and sell me your exhaust manifold :D

I need to look into options, not sure how much cost is involved with putting an M50/M52 in there. I have to ask the garage if the M42 savable and weigh it up. does anyone know a ball part Cost of an M50 or M52 and fitting? Think I could pick up an M42 for about £250/300 but it wont have 70k on the clock like my old one :x
