On some parts websites I'm seeing an engine with the code M40B18ME, with higher torque and power than the standard M40B18.

Does anyone have any info on this; what's the difference, what models was the ME fitted to etc.

I noticed a few odd engine codes in the mahle catalog (was piston hunting).

I may be wrong but i think the M40B18ME is the e36 version used in the compact and early 318s.

The M40 was never used in the Compact - the M43 had just come out when the Compact was launched.
