I need to know if these parts from an M40 will work on an M42, both are E30 motors.

M40 alternator on M42
M40 trans behind M42 engine
M40 starter on M42 engine (trans)

Thanks all!

Hi Roysneon,

The m42 has a shorter output flange, which is why an m40 propshaft is slightly longer than the m42 gearbox. The m42 gearbox has a slightly longer output flange.

I don't know if it's a difficult job to change the output flanges over.

Fitted my M42 engine straight onto original M40 box, but check crank spigot bearing, i had to change mine. M40 alternator fits, but the pulley is not quite as deep, so swap the m42 pulley onto it if you have it, or the belt will run slightly out of line. Havent tried the M40 starter yet, but think its a yes.
