not worked on one of these engines before but i had a similar problem on an m20b25 where i had the plugs for the crankshaft position sensor and spark pick up the wrong way around. it'l be something daft like that. theres only a few things that it can be. on the m20b25 could be DME engine management relay or wiring to it (can be checked by bridging contacts), or crankshaft position sensor if it had a knock whilst dropping in the engine. theres probably 1 or 2 more things that i've forgotten about but if you search on here i'm sure you'll find plenty info on it specifically for that engine. good chance its something wiring related though and most likely to do with the crankshaft position sensor(its posible to check the reistance across the pins to determine if its burned out but dont have a figure for you and if you know the pins at ecu you can do a continuity test or reistance check from there to determine if it wired into the correct plug).

good luck mate

What year is the m42 engine? Most probably you have EWS problems.

in relation to your other thread in technical help did you get the wiring loom sorted out as this is probably still your problem...
