After reading through the Wiki, am I right in thinking that you could theoretically install the 81mm crank on the 1.6 to stroke it to 1.8?

I took my Touring out last night and it's really struggling for power now, you can barely get 30 in second... it's going to need some money spending on the engine at some point so I thought I might look at my options.

Other option of course is to try and source an M42, but they seem super rare now!

Crank, pistons, AFM and chip in the ECU are the differences between the two. Rods, cam, head and manifolds are all the same.

Thanks Brian! I suspected it may be more but couldn't be sure...

It's probably the same ECU (maybe with a different part number), but with a different program on the EPROM chip.
