Hi, im in the middle of swapping my m40 with a m42. Upon taking the m40 out last night I found that one engine mount was knackered. I thought that the m40 and m42 mounts would be the same but according to real oem they are not. M40s are sort of diamond shaped and the m42s are hockey puck style. I have also been told/read that e28 M5 mounts fit and are stiffer. Apparently you have to use 2 of the mounts that look like the m40 ones (m5 ones are different each side of engine). I've read that hamburg technic make them and they are green. Can't find a part number for the m5 mounts on realoem, but have found a part number for the hamburg ones.
Basically which should I get and from where? (could do with them asap as i dont have a car until i get the engine back in!)
best engine mounts for m42?

Have just read that the green ones are e28 535is mounts not m5. Also they add a bit of vibration on idle, but make throttle feel more crisp. Thinking they mite be the way to go as i want to swap to a e36/46 steering rack and these mite give less problems. Still unsure though?

I started a thread on this in M42 club and there were a few options but all created more vibration as they're rubber and not oil filled. Some people using M10 mounts also looked into M50 mounts too I think.

Cool. I used m5 mounts in the end, they are the oil filled type. Weren't cheap but they are nice and solid. They do make the car vibrate a bit on idle but are fine when you're driving. Also they raised my engine up by about 15mm which is really handy on a low car!

15mm is quite a lot! Handy clearance for an E46 rack though!joeseth wrote:Cool. I used m5 mounts in the end, they are the oil filled type. Weren't cheap but they are nice and solid. Yeah that's what I was thinking. Plus stiff mounts should help right? I've got a 36 rack in my garage but are they just too much hassle to fit with an m42? I def wanna something with the steering rack soon, mines just a bit to sloppy
