Is it possible that an E36 M42 engine on an R plate may not have EWS.
Just brought a car that some one has half done a conversion from a `89 m40 1.6 to E36 M42,says he couldnt get it to spark, asked about the EWS and he reckons it didnt have it.
I have my doubts.
M42 EWS

97-98 plate, very unlikely that doesn't have EWS.
The other thing is are you sure that's an M42? RealOEM is only showing M42s fitted up to 01/96..

Had a look were the crank sensor is and its at the front.
Going to have a word with my friendly BMW parts man to see if it can be traced through the engine number and what looks like a chassis number on the ECU wba.......... etc
If not on the weigh bridge it goes and shove another lump in it

compact showing 01/96 as well, suppose it could a late plate built in 95/96, strange though.
If you have the chassis number bash it into www.realoem.com and see what it brings up.
The EWS is tied to the ECU so the donk can stay as is, what you'll need is an EWS delete on the existing ECU, a non EWS ECU or an ECU/EWS pair + key + ring antenna +module.
If the ECU has a SILVER label it has EWS, if the label is RED then it is non EWS (I think!)

Have a look down the list and see what Bosch P/N you have on the ECU, should tell you what it's from.

Having properly looked at the M42 sticky it`s quite clearly NOT an M42!
Although it does have four coils but in a straight row as opposed to a cluster.
But my obviuse(spelt?) mistake was.. no twin cams!
I`ve deffo decided to rip it out the poxy 1.6 and start again with my M50.

Thanks for your time an help mate

Nooooooooooo, I have just got a complete 1.6 E36 with the M43, it's a P reg, what is involved with swapping the engine into my 318i Touring E30. Many thanks.
I thank you in advance for all help.
I have searched the site and can't find info on this rather silly swap, the only reason I am doing it as I have both cars lying around and my E30 is knackered.
Thanks
