hi guys i want to bore my m42 engine, how big can i go with the bore with out it being dangerous? im going to use the standard crank and rods if i can will this be ok and will i need to do any head work or is it worth doing the head work to get the best gains?

I dont really know a lot about this but remember reading somewhere on here about someone changing the crank for the crank from a different engine (rover one from memory) which changes the stroke distance making the engine capacity 1.9 or 2.0. I think they did another couple of mods to flywheel etc and saw something like 220bhp from it!!!!
As I say, cant remember specific details so cant point you to their thread but may be worth looking into if you are looking at boring out engine and stripping it to that level.
