Just fitted a M52TUB28 into an E30. This is the second E30 I have done this swap to and all went fine the first time.
The first time I deleted the EWS and all was well. This time I thought I might leave the EWS in place and try and get it to work.
The car started and ran well although there was a strange starting thing: Once the car had run you had to completely remove the key with EWS chip from the pickup ring for at least 10 seconds for the car to crank and start.
We went on a couple of shake down runs and all seemed well. However after the last run the car would not start. It cranks but will not start.
Relevant fault codes are 128 DME - EWS interface and 209 EWS Tamper protection. Can anybody shed any light on this please?
I suspect that the EWS is unhappy at having no instrument cluster but am not sure.
Thanks,
Jon.

There's no connection between the instrument cluster and the EWS in either the E30 or the systems original home, so I doubt if that's the problem.
Check all your electrical connections, but I think you simply have a faulty EWS system.

If you have been testing with a low voltage battery you can have a situation where the EWS becomes 'unpaired' with the DME, you can realign the 2 with some diagnostic tools

Thank you for your replies.
I am aware of needing a re-syncing sometimes and I can do it with INPA.
However I can't get INPA to communicate with the EWS module.
There is a connection from the EWS module to the Instruments via the K-Bus... X10116.
But the Diagnostic port is not on that bus, it is on TXD1... X183.
The only common module between these two buses is the instruments and as the E46 instruments are not fitted to the E30 I am suspicious this may be the problem.
In the meantime I am checking all my wiring...probably more likely to be faulty!
Jon.
