Hey,

I'm pretty new to the forums and am not yet an e30 owner, I have been researching and think I will make the plunge, I will be looking at doing an m50 conversion so will take this in mind when choosing the right car.

Is there an ideal starting car for the conversion, do any models make it harder or easier and is there any that should be avoided. I know the lower ranges don't have rear discs and I believe only the 325 has a LSD.

I've seen a couple 316i that I like but was worried it wouldn't be up for the conversion, or would cost more in the long run because it is a lower model.

Thanks,

Reubeng

Welcome to the zone mate and any e-30 is a good one
If you buy an entry level car they can all be up-graded and you will then KNOW the work is 100%

If you start with a 316/318 then ideally you will need to upgrade the front suspension to deal with the extra weight. Starting out with a 320/325 will be less work and cost less in parts but initial purchase price may well be more expensive.

Ahh I hadn't thought of that, thanks :)

Personally, I think the best starting model is one that is structurally sound, i.e. minimal rust! Don't worry too much if it is a lower spec model as I expect you will be upgrading the suspension anyway. I would take it as an opportunity to refresh the brakes and rear end etc, i.e. put in some new bushes and so on.

As said above, one with minimal rust is the one to go far, but, if all else is equal, the touring models all come with 325i saloon type brakes and suspension that you will need for the engine upgrade, as do convertibles.
LSDs were a (rare) option on all models, and not fitted as standard on any, except for the 'sport' variant of the 325i saloon. All 325s do have the advantage of a stronger diff. though.

Thanks for all the replies.

How do you guys deal with insurance after an engine swap, it looks as if it would be hugely expensive?

Haha, I only meant as a modification to the car. Not so much the engine size.

Thanks.

I've fitted a m52 plus manual conversion and full 325i suspension and brakes to my 318i auto and currently insured with footman James for just over 200 fully comp agreed value of 3500 plus salvage rights if worst happens, they seem happier as it's a BMW engine that's been fitted though.
Standard would be about 150 compound so I'm well happy lol
