low rev grumble

Hi all. Anyone know a possible cause of a different engine noise at around 800/900 rpm under slight load ie when changing down to second at low speed up hill. Sounds like wear somewhere, not sure where to look first. Engine is seemingly healthy m52b28. Thanks
