I changed the oil and oil filter earlier. The oil capacity of the m50 is 6.5l and I put 8l to have a reading on the minimum mark. I know too much oil is not good but I can always drain some later. My dipstick part number shows it is from an e34 m50 as is the sump.

Could I have the wrong oil pick up/tube? from an e36 maybe?

After I poured 6l of oil in I ran the engine a few seconds then waited 10-15 minutes before checking the oil level. The dipstick was still dry at that point.

Thanks

JF

*edit: The oil capacity of the e34 m50 is 5.75L, I was looking at the e36 Haynes manual... All that is long sorted now :)

Would the e36 dipstick tube fit the e34 sump? I'll order a new e34 dipstick tube tomorrow and swap them over. I hope it will read proper levels and that I will be able to adjust the oil level accordingly.

Any input appreciated.

Your probably right about the tube, im 99% sure the dipsticks themselves are the same length, but the tubes must be different due to the E34 pan being deeper

Thanks Dan, that would mean the e34 tube is a bit shorter. I will order one and compare it with the one that is fitted. Very important business!
