For locking the engine at TDC to remove the head, can you use the BMW locking tool, or will it not match up with anything on the m20 flywheel?

It would have to be Mark on the crank pully . M20 fly don't have hole for locking tool

Shocked once again ross its a easy thing do to!!
you can remove the head without it at TDC and be more easy to see TDC with the head off and the O/T mark on the front pulley.
Thats if you got the timing tool for the head so guess you playing luck and just making marks as your guide

are you talking about using the flywheel lock tool? That bolts onto the top bellhousing holes on the back of the block. I'm pretty sure it works for most engines of that era
but you don't need to lock it when you strip really just for when its rebuilt its important

The last place I'd place a crank at to remove the head is TDC on any cylinder!
Turn it around 60 degrees off, and all the pistons will be safely part way down their bores.
