Everything else on dash working but fuel gauge always at half way, even when empty but if over half full, will go to full until around halfway again. The fuel light works fine which is very handy as i re fill when light comes on even though fuel gauge still shows half a tank.

The original clocks did not have a hole for a coding plug so i swapped them for a set from "i think" a 320 but it doesnt have the economy gauge under the rev counter.

Its a pre facelift non injected chromy with an added external fuel pump.

Any ideas?

The fuel gauge is different in pre facelift clusters, i learnt the hard way by buying and swapping in several different fuel senders. just change the fuel gauge from the old clock in to the new

Not quite right. The fuel gauge is different between cars with 55 litre fuel tanks and those with 62 litre tanks - More a difference in models than a pre/post facelift thing.
You appear to have the smaller tank, and have fitted a gauge, along with the replacement cluster, for a 62 litre tank.
As BMW_E30vert says, swapping back the original gauge will sort it.

Excellent, Thanks guys. I still have my old set of clocks.

I swapped over the speedo to keep the milage correct which fitted fine but i also tried to swap the rev counter over and the fittings were totally different.

My old clocks didnt even have the hole for a coding plug but will the fuel gauge still swap over ok?

Just to let you know, your info was correct.

I have removed the fuel gauge from my old clocks and swapped it with the set from a later car with the larger fuel tank and is now reading correct and working fine.

Thanks
