m40 to m50 swap coding plug question

am I right into thinking the coding plug is behind the dash cluster? Is it an easy thing to swap like pull and plug kind of thing? I've just had a hard time taking the plastic surround off and would like to confirm this before break something

The coding plug is a white plug on the lower right side of the front of the cluster. Just the front trim needs to come off to get at the plug.

Cheers buddy, while you are there, why am I always looking for a 6th gear since the swap? M50 box, 3.25 lsd.. I would have never driver around town in forth or even engage the 5th at 40mph with the m40. Is there a box I could look for with an overdrive 5th? I presume that is the problem..

If you feel you havnt got enough gears then you need a taller diff ratio, but TBH much taller than 3.25 will kill off the M50 performance, what size tyres do you have?

Hello Danthe, tyres are 215/40/R17 cheers buddy.

How do you remove that bloddy plastic bit, the one above the steering culumn? I snapped the cluster trim just a little bit

Does the coding plus also make the mpg gauge work normally?

215/40/17 is only slightly smaller than a 205/55/15 original tyre size, so its not going to change the gearing much from standard

The plastic panel is held on by two alloy knurled nuts on the rear, one each side

I ran a 3.15:1 ratio diff on my 5spd 24v conversion and I used to 'potter' around town in 5th from about 30-35mph, granted mine did have another 100bhp over an M50/52 engine.
However, I often wanted a 6th/overdrive gear for motorway cruising just to lower the revs at 70-80mph.
