i think i sort off know the answer to this anyway but just to clarify

i have the m52b28 with the 2.8 gearbox with m50inlet and a danthe remap,

with the 318i diff i be honest of the mark it goes like a shit off the shuvvle but in 5th it will top out at around 95 i believe this is all because of the diff aint it and if i changed it , it would sort this out?

Yes it's down to the diff as the zf unit doesn't have an overdrive 5th gear.

It has "unknown" (read as known starship mileage that seller would rather withhold), £100 P&P and will need a rebuild guaranteed. Top work as usual rich, as you say the zone is full of people milking it

Like with anything. Personally I would always factor in a rebuild as the youngest are roughly 20 years old and they have a finite life due to clutch plates wearing

PM a zoner called Gareth, he is the diff guru on here. And you just unbolt your old diff and install the new one, the prop length might need adjusting slightly though

Quite surprised it tops out at 95 mph with a 2.8 engine, when with the standard 1.8 it would do comfortably over 100 mph - in fact, 114mph, according to this link: :?

He is using the 2.8 box which has a direct 5th gear as opposed to the 1.8 which has an overdrive 5th.

That's nice rich, very on topic

i was just about to say that with the 1.8 in it i think i pushed 120 out of it at a stuggle but the engine was pretty abused, and smoked like a bitch! , but ross_jsy wha you mean by an overdrive 5th?

The zf box you have has a direct drive 5th gear I.e 1 revolution on the input shaft equates to 1 revolution on the output shaft. The getrag box used with the 318i has an overdrive so every 1 revolution on the input shaft equates to more than 1 turn on the output, hence why your diff is geared too low

If that's a Torsen diff, it's a bit of a bargain.

A Torsen behaves like an open diff when unloaded so iirc, the only way to be certain is to drain the oil and remove the backplate.
