Flywheel

I'm using the e36 328 gearbox with my conversion ,but won't to junk the dual mass flywheel.is it ok to use the m20 lightened flywheel and clutch between the m52b28 and the 328 box?
Also I take it I use the m20 starter

The M20 flywheel will need some machining to fit , as the back half of it will foul on the M50/52 block. However as a result of machining the back to clear it you end up with a 6kg flywheel which really wakes up the M50/52

When fitting, you'll need M20 flywheel bolts and a spreader plate that looks like a spacer to go behind the flywheel. It doesn't, it goes in front to spread the load from the bolts.

We made that mistake on Motorhole's M52 conversion and had to remove the engine and box to swap them over again

im doing my M20 flywheel skim next week and what mm's did you take it back?

The M20(non-skimmed) its on the car now for over a year without the spacer not had any problems. What is the purpose of the spacer?

Do you mean the bolt side (gearbox side) or the thread side (engine side) of the flywheel for the spacer ??

Not sure, got the flywheel from DanThe so don't know exactly how much he takes off. Spacer isn't actually a spacer at all, its a speader/locking plate for the flywheel bolts so it goes on the gearbox side and the bolts go through that, then through the flywheel. Made sense when I did it the second time

cheers mate for that but im sure i didnt use that spreader on mine but will find out once its all off cant remember but been all good for the past year. now every thing is get checked and double checked

did hear if you take the M52 fly and take the spacer from the front which it riveted to the fly and put it on the front of the M20 fly there is no need for the skim to get to the sump bolts. just have to drill one of the holes for the dowel

You will be moving the flywheel back by the thickness of the spacer in that case, which will mean that the starter may not mesh properly with the ring gear. If it does mesh, it won't be bang on and could result in premature starter/ring gear failure. One of Dan's flywheels isn't expensive, will be even less if you already have one for someone on here to skim worth a few tenners for a proper job imho.
