custom exhaust help

ive fitted the m52 engine to my car and looking at making a new exhaust system as i think the exhaust on it the pipe diameter is to small...because its a 1.8 one,

could someone tell me the best size of pipe to use, people are saying 2" but then people are saying 3"

will be using a lengh of stainles just curiouse what pipe to use thanks:) ,

i think 3" is to big.. 2.5" would be perfect

single 2.5 is the best for gains and sounds the nuts aswel.!

thanks for that mate, people are saying u get more power with twin pipes not just one? , is this true? i no u said its best for gains u mean power?

Basic maths -

Cross section of a 2.5 inch pipe is 4.9 square inches
Cross section of a pair of 2 inch pipes is 6.3 square inches

By cross section he means the total area inside the pipes.
Some people use "X" pieces and some dont.
iirr m20 pipes dont have them,but the E36 pipe i`m using the two pipes connect into one then comes out as two.
Twin 50mm pipes ftw :)
