ive just put the car back together after the horrors detailed here:
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=224718

and the car is no better at all. infact it might even be worse

im fresh out of ideas, can anyone think of anything to help. im so far past the end of my tether, im loaning money and buying another car as a runabout becasue i cant take getting lifts and trains everywhere

i have a missfire across the rev range. it is a lean missfire. it is not consistant with revs.

if you give it full throttle it will climb the revrange but you can tell it is lean. it smells of burning oil, backfires and sounds like its running on 5

it has a very slight missfire on tickover, and occasionally, but not all the time has a hunting idle.

the missfire mainly comes in when you apply any serious amount of throttle or increase the load on the engine, say up a hill for example.

on constant throttle and constant running the car does not missfire at all

i also have a ticking noise from the head at valve speed which i am assuming is the hydraulic lifters not reciving the correct oil pressure

what i have done so far to fix the problem (all have made no difference):

repeatedly checked for air leaks, found one, (made a slight improvement)
vanos seals (made slight improvement)
gasket at oil pickup in the sump,
mass air meter changed for genuine second hand
lambda sensors changed for genuine second hand
injectors refurbed
knock sensor changed for genuine second hand

i havent had the spare money to get it on the diagnostics - i did buy a unit but it couldnt work with my computer so ill buy another one when i have a spare £40!

any ideas or encouragement welcome!

cheers,
Matt

Have you tried Cam/Crank sensors?

Crank sensor was new , haven't changed cam sensor - thought that would be a case of either working or not working? Can they be out?

Plugs are light brown indicating lean..

Cheers lads

is there a case of jumped timing here ? or sticking lifter or lifers?

I checked the timing when I did the vans it seemed legit. Only thing I'm thinking is maybe the fuel pump can't hack the increase in flow rate required?

How can I check the lifters?

Matt

cant really mate check them, not without the cams out :( but they will be tapping like an gooden if they are fooked or worn cam's, did you check the cam's when you did the vanos? guess your use nice oil too or try some lifter trement and get it from wurth if you try that route they are good

Cams aren't worn I checked when the valve cover was off, you could be right about the liters though. I think bits new engine time anyway when I have the cash. Ill get diagnostics on it and see what that is saying first.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know .
Cheers, Matt

think mine on number 6 got stuck only cos my silly mate red lined it cold after we did the M50 intake on it. sounded like an air leak in the intake when it happened but went away after 30 secs but never sounded tappy before or after was just that time

spend the money mate and see what fault codes pop up. you tried take the live off the batt see if the ECU resets or clear the fault codes if any?

WHAT A NIGHTMARE
