M52 B28 help

hi all iv striped my m52 b28 engine down some time ago and i am now putting it back together i am at the point of putting the cams back in and from what i can gather i need a special tool to lock the cams to time the vanos? iv had a look for this tool and it £400 i was wondering how people have got round this problem?
