wrong..... back of the head to the lower stub (inlet) and top stub (outlet) to the rad return. get these the wrong way and the incorrect flow will bounce off the heater valve creating an annoying clicking noise when you hit approx 3000rpm.

Definitely back of head to lower stub. Even on standard E30s, this is the opposite of the way the pipes lie most naturally, so they often get put on wrongly.

As the flow rate increases, the diaphragm of the electric valve is forced shut by the reverse flow, often damaging it in the process.
