Hey guys,

just wondering if anyone can tell me if one of these is the correct 'stat needed for the m50 conversions?

http://www.micksgarage.ie/autoparts.asp ... &CarID=241

If so, which on? (The only difference is that i can see is that one has a gasket/seal and the other doesn't?)

Thanks in advance,
Phil

When I ordered my 88degree from sytner it came with a rubber seal. I would get that 1 mate cos there is no difference in the 2 what so ever apart from that. May aswel change the seal and stat in 1 go :D

So if im reading this right.....

the 88 degree thermostat needed for the M52,

is the stat out of a 2.5 M50 ?

if so,

why in the 2.8 is the thermostat a 92 degree one?
you would think that with it being a bigger capacity engine, BMW would allow it to run cooler not hotter

Good thinking but not quite there - extra capacity on the engine does mean extra cooling is required but that's done by the radiator. The stat opens at 92 on a lot of engines to get best fuel economy (at 93 degrees) whereas best power is actually made around 72 degrees. The size of the radiator dictates the final operating temperature - the stat helps with a quicker warm up...

If you are aiming for power, the best option is always the lowest temperature stat you can get your hands on - tropical or hot climate stats are always a good idea!

Cheers,
Mike
