I`v now had my car on the road for a month now and its been superb to drive, but last week drove it home parked it up and for some reason when i went to start it on the evening to go to work it started to tap (yes like one of the tappets have gone on it) can any one tell me what sort of job this is to do on an m50 or would it be best to dump it and start again.

if anyone know the cost of this job as well can you let me know.

What condition is the exhaust manifold in, would it be that baz?
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Have to get it looked at...would the tapping from the manifold

Should of stayed with the m20

check a load of daft things Barry like are the spark plugs in tight, is the exhaust manifold tight to the head, is the lambda sensor in tight?

Where does it sound like the tapping is coming from, top of the engine, front etc etc

I dont think it sounds too bad, possibly a sticking hydraulic tappet. you could try some engine flush, get the engine nice and hot and change the oil and filter. then thrash it, the m50s are bomb proof :D

willnz wrote:5W40, 10W40 (as close as you can get to these) Not sure what grades are available in the UK? (Diesel oil has strong detergents built in to help keep the engine clean)

You must have a leak somewhere, removing the cap should result in a noticeable change in rpm.
Thanks will i`ll look into the air leak, i just carnt get my head around using diesel oil but if it works i`ll try it,

:o: sorry to ask this but can anyone else back up what Willnz is saying.

I'd probably do about 200 miles and I wouldn't rev the fanny off it, but it's probably perfectly safe.

If you're brave, parafin & gear oil & leave to tick over for 20 mins would clean her out :)

Thanks for that buddy, great read

He talks about doing it to a vvti and as i dont know how much oil one of them takes
Would i do the same 3ltr mix.

We have diesel trucks at work so i can get my hands on loads of them both.

tonight at work i`v got myself 10ltr of 10/40 diesel oil which we use in our trucks from volvo and about the same in transmisson oil which is the same thing isn`t, will these both be ok to use let me know as i`m going to give it a try sometime today.

what i need to know is how much to use...???? the same as if i was butting fresh oil in.
