Removing a sump

Does anyone know or tried?
Is it possible to remove a sump from an E34 whilst the lump is still sat in the car?
The haynes bible says to lift the engine up a far as possible.
I have my doubts that this is possible to remove without lifting it.

You wont get the sump off without lifting the engine away from the crossmember. Getting the bolts out is a mission in itself
