I'm in the process of preparing the engine before it goes into the car and just wanted to check what I need to do with the two black canisters which appear to be connected to the intake system. I think one of them is the carbon canister.
Can these just be binned and the vacuum hole blocked off on the manifold?

I think the other canister you mention is the air/oil separator known as ccv. It's not needed but some sort of catch can will be needed I just left it on. They can fail according to the internet but mine works fine and I'll look at changing it if it ever fails.

I think the second cannister is the vacuum for the exhaust muffler flap so will be getting rid of that. Still deciding whether to ditch the oil separator as the M50 manifold doesn't have the hold to mount it. Might just run the rocker cover outlet to the intake elbow (as shown in the M50 fitting instructions on the Wiki pages). I suppose I could just install a catch can instead.

You dont need a catch can or the oil separator for normal everyday driving car or even if your car is a toy and just used for weekend type blasts, but for a short geared track car that spends most time at high revs you will need a separator due to the amount of extra crank case gasses/oil being pulled through
