Morning all,
currently taking out M52B28 of an E36, i have the E36 as a breaker on ebay and i have someone who has asked for the steering colum. i know they have funny bolts in them however i need to transfer EWS over to E30 just needed to know what i need off it for the EWS system.
the e36 is taking my viginity with an engine swap so if anyone wants to give me a hand pulling it out or some advise will be appriciated!!

If you are removing the engine take the whole front end off, one of the great things about the e36.
For the EWS, you will need the key and the ECU, the EWS relay box, this will be behind the glove box (probably light grey or black), about the size of a fag packet and will have a yellow plug with wiring attached, remove the plug from the body loom cutting the wires with a decent length of wire on them. Next remove the key antenna from around the ignition barrel, trace the wires back to a small box below the steering column, you will need all of this again with some wiring so it can be made up again in the e30.
The chip will need to be removed from the e36 donor key and put into yours, ideal if you have a torch key, on mine I even managed to keep the torch working, with a bit of fettling.
You will need to then rewire the EWS, I think there is a diagram in the wiki. Doing this, the pin numbers are more important than the colours.

Front end of e36 is off (agreed it looks and makes things easy) and all the front end loom is off MAF sensor etc all that left is fuel rail/intake manifold, exhaust manifold, fuel line and wiring loom and a few other bits ill have to have a look at.
so i just need to cut out the EWS box with a good length of wiring and the key antenna (dont know what this looks like).
with the EWS chip in the key can i get the diamond shape key open without needing to send it off?
the one thing i havent spent much time on learning is EWS and wiring so thanks for the info very helpful there is a couple of boxes behind the glove box do you know what the other ones are for? just for the info dont need to do anything with them.
Thanks

Leave the loom plugged to the engine, it will unplug at a conector called the x20.
The antenna is a plastic ring and it is around the key hole of the ignition barrel, two wires going to it, trace these to the signal box. This transmits the signal from the key to the ews box. If the code in the key and the ecu match then the relay is switched and the engine can be started.
Just open the key up, the chip is small, black and an odd shape. its about 10mmx5mm. dont lose it!
The other boxes, hmmm, there is the central locking module, and the window control module, but much depends on the trim level of car you have.

Ok will leave the rest of the loom in there and take out the x20 plug, however there is 2 next to the fuse box i believe one is ABS/ASC control and the other x20?
Also i know about the EWS chip in the key as i have recently changed the buttons on E39 key the old rounded one and its rather strange as its not attatched to anything.
and oh ok i wont worry to much about it then.
Thank you for your help
