Replace it with one from a 328i, or even a 330i.

As its got the M52B25 in it, is it just a straight swap to put the M25B28 into it?

How long would it take a compentant mechanic to do it?

If the engine its form E46 you got M52B25Tu (2x vanos).
Quickest and most powerful replacment is M52B28Tu. Should be p&p

Fitting M54 would need a minor modifications

Its still a waste of time tuning. 2.8 is what you need 8)

First and the best modyfikaction without changing engine to M52B28 is intake manifold from M50B25.

Most likely because it was cheap, which would make you wonder about the quality of the rest of the conversion

The guy I've bought it from owns a BMW specialist garage and has rebuilt the car after getting off the previous owner

As you've just bought the car, I'd suggest just getting in, driving it and having some fun for a while. Forget making it faster until you've learnt to drive it.

Then as above, get yourself an M52B28... and while you're enjoying driving the car, build a tasty M52B30 :D

I agree, not a bad plan.

I've got a bit of experience with RWD with no driver aids, had a 360hp Lotus Elise with a supercharged and charge cooled K20a in it, weighed 800kg

Should be okay with this

I believe the basic ingredients are pistons, rods and crank from an M54B30. There's a few being built on here so a search should bring up some details.

You are using bottom end from M54B30 with block and head from M52B28.

imho its better to swap M54B30 in good condition.

Proper building engine its not a easy job

Its easier for you to just fit an M52B28 and use it as is, plenty out there.... unless you have the time to build an engine and the associated things to go with it. I saw your thread on CS - search my username on there and you will find my M54 engine build thread.
