I went through something similar with a loom from an e39 and ended up having to use the BMW WDS application (just google BMW WDS).

I ended up giving up and buying an e36 loom because the e39 loom had stuff going to different plugs on different sides of the car and would have required almost a complete custom rewire to make it work.

Your loom may or may not suffer from similar problems.

As above, its not worth the hassle, most sections of the loom are not long enough as the ECU is located in the engine bay

i found wds yesterday so figured out what was what. Ill look for a 36 loom then, unless i can find a nice place to mount the ecu, its going in to a e28 so it may possible be able to fit behind the bulkhead.

cheers
