Alright lads,

I need to remove the sump from Andy's car. He has the lightened flywheel so i can access the rearmost sump bolts. However, when I have tried before it is impossible to get the sump on or off with the gearbox still on - to take the sump off i have to take the gearbox off - gearbox off means prop off, heatshield and exhaust off - a much bigger job!

could i remove the oil pump to allow the sump the few extra mm of movement forward to get it past the gearbox?

If so i assume i will need to mark and fix the crank and cams at tdc as the timing chain will be slackened?

Has anyone found a permanent solution to this sump problem?

Cheers,
Matt

I did this in situ a while ago on my car. Not a nice job but can be done.

I disconnected the oil pickup pipe and bought a new gasket, raised the engine as high as possible without straining any pipes etc and after a bit of knuckle scraping it was out.

I couldn't take the rear bolts out so I drilled the heads off and replaced with allen bolts after :)

It's been a while so I can't remember if I messed with the subframe.... Done so much on this car that it all blurs into a vague memory (thankfully).

If you need the extra space, partially remove the bolts holding the subframe in place to give you extra clearance. You may have to take the lollipop bolts out to allow it to come down further. If you need even more space get longer bolts and swap two for the longer ones and remove the standard bolts.

Hope this helps as I know it had me scratching my head at the time. Everyone said engine out but I knew there had to be a way as it was so close.

thanks for the reply mate, just the subframe clearance wasnt the issue it was clearance of the lip at the back of the sump that goes a little into the gearbox, when the oil pump was attached.

I solved it though, if you lower the subframe as you say then remove the bracket for the power steering pump you can get the extra few mm and get it out (assuming skimmed flywheel)

cheers,
Matt

I forgot about the ps pump.
Glad to hear you got it sorted, it isn't a nice job especially on your back with the car on axle stands!
