I just bought an M50 converted 320i with a slipping clutch, problem I now have is identifying which gearbox I have, are there any quick ways to find out? Part numbers etc?

Thanks all :thumb:

Well I got the box off today, it looks like an e36 box to me but the gearbox mount hadn't been modified so not 100%

Its definately dual mass flywheel though.

Numbers how they appear on the box are: BMW 1221 936 9 and 013 226
012 225 1221 899 9

Anybody shed any light on that so I can order a clutch?

The mount wont be moddified if an Is or an e36/e34 box has been used as the e30 mount fits straight on to the box. Its only when the M20 gearbox is used the mount needs butchering.

Take a picture of the cluch and flywheel then we should be able to tell you what clutch is being used

If its a ZF box and dual mass flywheel you will have an M50 box, just measure the clutch plate diameter before ordering

I rang euro under the assumption it was an M50 525i box and they only gave me one option, I will measure it though and double check in the morning before I order it! Thanks.

Few pictures just for reference...

328i box is very similar, just a slightly larger bell housing, but the clutch/flywheel is bigger, its unlikely but you might have a 328i clutch etc

325/525 clutch is 228mm

I have what I believe is a M50 flywheel, clutch & cover plate here for a M50 box.

Just measured the clutch plate and it is 227mm across. It is a Sachs and has a good amount of meat on it.

If this corresponds with your measurements then you are welcome to the clutch for £10 or the whole lot incl flywheel for £30 posted (due to the weight)

Let me know.

Edit, Dan, does the above M50 shizzle fit within the E30 iS gearbox as that is what it was all bolted within when I got it. I could be wrong is the iS comes with a dual mass setup?

it was only when I had the M50 drama and the engine & box were separated I noticed the dual mass wrongness, so it then got replaced with M20 flywheel & clutch.

Dan, thanks for that mate, just measured it and its 228mm should be straight forward ordering one.

BeemerLad, thanks for the offer mate but I need it tomorrow so I will have to get it from Euro.
