Been wondering about this, Can't see/find any write up's either. I know you can use a 3.6 or 3.8 crank from the e34 but that's as far as it goes.
Can anyone shed some light on this. And is it worth doing.

no only the 3.8 crank is larger early e28 m5 stroke was less than a 3.5m30, e34 stoke is the same as a 3.5
