yet another m30 swap
Moderator: martauto
hi,
im finally about to begin my swap, just a few questions. (sorry im new to this so they mayu sound abit thick)
whats the second box next to the ecu for?
when removing an engine is it best to completely remove the loom or just detach it from the body and save time maybe?
My rad from the 535 fits perfectly between the legs of the e30, i assume that this should be okay to cool the car aslong as it fits and doesnt touch the engine?
I have a sigma alarm in the 535, is this likely to cause may problem?
and lastly, i heard some used a 325 prop but swapped something over from the back of the gearbox? does anyone have the part number for this? i think it was leeparkers conversation.
Thanks in advance, i will get some picture up later.

1, leave it in the donor its not needed
2, detatch it from the body
3, yep there fine, Ravs using one
4, if its been cut into the loom just cut it out and rejoin the wires
5, that will be me, few others have gone down the same route with no problems, you use the gearbox flange from a 325i (must be 325i, 320i isnt the same) flanges brand new are not cheap, one guy i know brought a 325i box for £30 took the flange off then sold the box on, use 325i prop & gear linkage too
Oh and

That's a 720amp battery, if relativley new, should be woth about £50-£60, but more when New.
That plug, is it on the engine loom or car loom?

That white plug is not needed
All you need is the main loom and ECU, main live cable and thats about it, as rav said it helps to keep the earth strap
Edit: will that battery fit in the E30? mines similar to that and 'just' fits, cranks the M30 over lovely

Short shift is only the gear lever, nothing else, so it will fit on any e30 regardless engine size.

Are you on the floor trying to undo the E34 prop??
You need a bis extension bar, some weight behind it and then it will shift, or a rattler gun.

If your ratchet can take it get a scaff bar on there for some extra leverage

did get time today, will do tomorrow hopefully engine out and prep time.
I got to say lee you must have OCD or something to get your engine that clean, i dont think i can match that.
finally got the prop off but it didnt come apart from the middle for some reason, so after 30 mins of head scratching i managed to get it off in another way.leeparkes wrote:Did you get it off?
engine out, pleasently surprised how easy it was lol

yeah i did notice that, looks like it got 100 bolts on though, going to do all the belts too.johnl320 wrote:Have a good look at the sump gasket, if its wet, change it before the lump goes in and makes changing it a lot more tricky, something I regret not doing

i have tried to clean as best i can, gonna spray the manifolf and mounts in silver, an alpina style rocker and inlet similar to yours. Going to do the stuff mentioned above thursday hopefully everything will turn up.
Does anyone have a picture of how the left hand side engine mount connects to the engine? (looking at the engine from the front)
