is it hard to find extra bits for the converion such as gearbox and so on? what extra bits will i acctually need?

An M30 auto will have had an easier life so if you can find an M30 box go for it

Put a wanted post on here for a manual box (you will need to register)

don't forget a flywheel and clutch :D

if you need to source one, look out for the E28 M30 flywheel as it's lighter than the E34 one. however the clutches are harder to come by and more costly.
