Last few days ive been mostly counciling...:)

Never been happy with the standard M30 air box with all the heat around it so ive made an air tight induction heat shield, what a bastid nightmare
Made about half a dozen templates out of card measuring/test fitting/cutting/ then start again because of daft mistakes.
Anyway perfection was achieved, marked up on sheet steel then cut out and bent to fit.

Here it is primered up ready for a satin black top coat.

Image

Image

Painted satin black.

Image

Dug a load of bonnet seals and trim to go round it to make it air tight.

Image

No more pics but this is it fitted.
Im using a massive K&N about 12" long which is rated at 500hp so plenty big enough, took the cold air feed from behind the headlight also there is a hose going from the brake duct up through the aircon hole.

Ta'daaa... :)

Image

Results? well it hasnt gained 20hp but the engine does feel more perky and more responsive especially when on the move say at around 50mph.
Sounds mental at high revs too, roars like a nutter!

In traffic its fine too, i had a k&N cone fitted to a 325i and it would run rough and bog down a little when first setting off. This doesnt!

All in all im quite pleased.

It would probably work well with a track car as your always on the move at speed.

That should do the trick, now I want one 8)
Could you tell me what size sheet metal I should get? I cannot meassure it myself right now, but could have a look at work tomorrow and see if I can get my hands on a nice thin piece of aluminium..

Cheers,

Kos that screwdriver has seen some action i can tell you, And no none of that 'one man one screwdriver business. :)

The sheet was about 80cm x 40cm, thickness ive no idea, the guys in the unit a few doors down from me make extactor units and they gave it to me.

Rust protection? Its got to come back out soon anyway to sort a couple of rust issues, one you can see in the pic above where the washer bottle has been rubbing and a little spot in the corner at the bottom.

Cant believe its pissin down with rain. :banghead:

Here's a tip, Remove the headlight then shut the bonnet then slide the cardboard up from underneath and mark across the chassis rail through the hole where the headlight was.

Right, spent the last month or so with the E30 in bits, carpets out and re sound deadened.
After loads of research it was a toss up between Silent coat or STP GOLD, many go for Dynamat but from what ive read its over rated and expensive.
I chose the STP stuff because its easy to work with and light, i got 6 sheets which covers just over 25 sq ft and that lot weighs 9kg (1.5kg each)

Anyway i covered both front floor pans right up as high as i could get up the bulkhead, then went over the tunnel. Also covered the rear footwells but not completely.

Pics

Half way there...

Image

Footwell and tunnel covered.

Done.

With that done the carpet went back in, ive dyed it black using Autoglym aerosol shizzle, came out ok.

Well the result is fantastic, car feels and sounds much more modern now, well worth the effort.

Im looking at the furniture clinic stuff now to restore the leather cos it looks a bit out of place now. :)

Good work Lee, missed your air intake update, you might be able to get an E30 intensive wash bottle in the air enclosure on the original stud

How much was all the sound deadening Lee?

Been considering doing this on my m30 turd just to reduce that engine and gearbox noise really.... but there's a part of me that likes the sound of that lump and box howl as they spool up.

You should still have the factory deadening in there? i scraped all mine off searching for rust plus it had gone all brittle anyway.

Car felt a lot quieter after and had a modern feel to it, if want noise i open the window. :)

Thick stuff aswell, i dont have any in the gearbox tunnel as like yours it was touching, i think it was the bigest gearbox bolt that was catching, the one near the slave.

On the top of the box???
If so, I don't have the top 2 on mine, makes it easier to take the G/box off.

Hey Lee

I am about to do the wiring changes on my M30. Just wanted to check mine as mine is a chromie and is the wiring change the same as you did. Or different as mine is old. I am using an engine from an 88 e34.

Better drag this off page two and update it. :)

First off, front suspension bufty refresh, new Lemforder lower arms with ball joints, M3 eccentric lollipop bushes, front legs stripped, painted and protected then fitted with H&R cup kit shocks and springs.
Ignore the skanky discs, they wont be on for much longer as ill be upgrading the brakes soon.

Image

Next up is the front end repaired/resprayed.

Image

Now, the rimzzz... as ill be going with bigger brakes i needed at least 16's,
Treated myself to a set of staggered Alpina's (sorry no pics)
problem is ill be using the car as a daily again soon and im a bit paranoid in case i damage them or if they get nicked!
So the pina's will only be used for best. :)

So i needed a cheap set of wheels that i dont really care if they get knocked about etc.
But they had to be 16's and be able to take a 225 tyre on the rear.

First of all i went down the Borbet route but once they were on the car i didnt think it suited it so they were quickly sold on.

I decided to buy new, they were £360 Delivered and had Drift on the box.

Image

BBS reps, 4x100/4/108 16x8j ET25 and 16x9j ET20 with gold studs an big dish innit. 8O

Image

Now i had plans as soon as they arrived as the super duper hyper silver isnt my cup of tea so that had to be changed.

I still had the gunmetal paint details from years ago when i painted my BBS mahles so nipped to the paint shop to get some mixed up.

Masking them up was easy, i used masking tape to go round the centre then used the box for the rest. :)

Image

This is how they turned out, couldnt get a decent pic due to the flash.

I wont be using the centre caps either as pretty simply i dont like them. :) i prefer to see the bolts and with the 4x100/108 stud pattern imo dont look to bad.

I will be using a centre cap of some sort just to cover the hole in the middle.

Ill update with better pics soon in daylight as it doesnt realy show off the colour of the paint but here they are

Not bad for only £85 a wheel and the quality dont seem too bad, plus they have had about four coats of Poorboys wheel sealant on them to give them a help in hand at surviving the elements.

I nipped to see my old school mate who runs a tyre bay and picked up a pair of Goodyear 215/45/16's to go on the front but still undecided about the rear, has to be 225 but dont know whether to go with 40 or 45's.

Should be taxed in the next couple of weeks and cant wait!
