173 is the facelift 325i Motronic 1.3 ECU - one of the best out of the bunch.

The 150 was Motronic 1.1 fitted to early M30B35s, while the later ones had the 179 Motronic 1.3 ECU - the same as a 173 apart from the EPROM chip.

What is the difference between 1.1 and 1.3?

1.3 has higher resolution than 1.1 (more memory map locations), thus giving enhancements in driveability, and slight power gain.

Also, it was designed for running catalytic converters on later models.

The main advantage is it has just one PCB, making it more reliable and easier to chip.

Jim,
You'll need an adaptor plate to fit those, available from Germany.
Also the thermostat housing will need altering, basically cutting and welding the top outlet to a different angle.
Also, those are well overpriced!

they do look good but not sure if you would get any real extra BHP though, maybe 20 or so max.

wonder how much a port, polish, 291/283 cam, 1mm oversize valve and seats would and decent free flow exhaust would add in BHP and Torques terms??

BTW....I had to look after the children this afternoon, so set them up with lego and read the whole thread....brilliant read, really nice way to spend an hour or so on a sunday afternoon with the radio on. I've got a nice M30 donk so just doing "research" and collecting bits ready for an installation next spring into the e30 cab, need to source an LSD also as currently have 4.1 open = new tyres every traffic lights. lol :D

Coupled with a cam and six branch, prob a good 30-40 hp. Its ok saying they will fit, but I've never seen these used with standard management, I'm not sure how that would cope?

this has some useful info on:

http://www.m535i.org/officers/ra/article.html

ITB bit pasted below:

There are two options for a individual throttle body system. The first is to attempt to retrofit the M5 intake system. This requires at a minimum fabricating adapters from the head to the M5 intake runners. It also requires investigating the choice of fuel rail, as the M88 or S38 rail and FPR will not clear the t-stat housing on the M30. Similarly, the TPS switch will have to clear the t-stat housing. To do this the adapters have to be angled so as to point the intake runners above/below the t-stat housing and rad hose. The other option is to get the Weber DCOE adapter brackets from Redline Weber (Redline Weber part # 99004 094). The castings aren’t that great, so porting and polishing them is a must. However, 40mm or 45mm Weber fuel injection ITBs can then be bolted onto these. Again, one of the flanges near the t-stat housing has to be shaved a bit to clear, and I have not verified if the TPS switch will clear the t-stat housing and rad hose, but this looks to be more a ”˜bolt-in’ solution. Additionally you’ll need a custom intake plenum. http://www.jameng.com and http://www.twminduction.com are both good sources for the ITB components, as well as Top End Performance can order anything from Redline Weber.

I've seen this before, it's a good read. I would definatly be thinking some better engine management to get the best out of the m30 though, removing the dizzy aswell. I'll be taking alot of this into account when building my next lump and head.

ECU is on and let it tick over for 10 minutes, so far so good! ill take it out later to see whats what.

Is there a procedure to take when i do the half hour drive to re-learn the settings?

Ive got a 173 now with my pina chip in.

The two you sent the one wouldnt run and the 150 was an early twin board business.

Just drive it in all gears using all the rev range, which should transfer across all the settings.

Sometimes, it can take several drives or a few days to fully bed in.

Strange - they're identical to a 173, and these are usually pretty reliable. :?
