Im doing a conversion on my coupe soon and i have everything i need sorted. Only thing that im not 100% sure on is using the uprated clutch kit from ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E30-316-3 ... 1080091621)
is it going to take a bit of hard driving? how long is it going to last?

Has anyone used one for a longer time?

was also wondering, i know the m20 solid flywheel (228mm) will bolt up but the problem is with the starter crushing againts the ring gear. what if you fitted the m10 ring gear on the flywheel? or replaced the pinion gear on the starter?

I've done two M30 conversions, both times using an M10 getrag 240.

The first time I used M10 flywheel with that CG paddle clutch. I didn't drive the car long before I sold it but it seemed to hold up. I remember it did slip once but it was a pretty hard clutch dump. I should think for longer term it's probably fine.

The second time I used an S14 M3 flywheel and a 228mm M20 solid friction disc paddle clutch. This gives the 228mm clutch fitment along with the starter tooth pitch of the M30/M10/S14 family. This combination is bulletproof although the solid friction disc is a handful in traffic! I've used this for a year on and off so far including track and drifting. I wouldn't think modifying an original M20 flywheel would work...

Do you recon the 228 fly + Sachs clutch will be good ? Or better than the paddle 215mm?

Thanks for the reply

Also will m10 starter go with S14 flywheel ? Or do I need m30 starter ?

And what release bearing with the s14 30mm or 25?

I think it's a case of what's available to you. In order of what I'd use...

1 - E34 M30 box, E28 M30 singlemass flywheel, E28 M535i clutch
1 - E30 M10 box, E30 S14 flywheel, 228mm M20 uprated clutch
2 - E30 M10 box, E30 M10 flywheel, 215mm M10 paddle clutch

All will do a similar job and the M10 paddle clutch will probably be fine, but I'd use it last out of the above options. I'm not sure if a standard 228mm clutch will be up to the job, all I know is that my 228mm paddle clutch is more than enough.

S14 is from the same engine family with the same starter ring as the M10 / M30, as such M10 or M30 starters will both work with an S14 flywheel. When I used an M10 flywheel I used an E34 M30 starter, I can't remember what's on my current S14 flywheel setup, probably the E28 M30 starter motor (it's an E28 M535i engine). M10 / M30 starters are interchangeable and will work with S14 flywheel.

FYI with an M10 box, E30 M20 320i prop and gear linkage are direct fitment.

Nice, I have a 228 flywheel coming up this week so I'll go that way about it :) I'll see how my budget looks after all the other parts are collected and then see what I can afford.

Cheers for the info !! :D
