That's cool mate, it's good to spread the work over a number of months, helps to spread the cost and keep the Mrs off your back.

That crane is a great buy at that price, can't go wrong with that. I know it's a few more quid but I used a load leveller also and it was fantastic, well well worth the money.

Hope those trinkets for sale bring in loads of ££££ for the engine swap, it's well worth it mate .

Yer, the only problem with my engine bay is I have a little oil leak from that plate on the back of the cylinder head, so looks like the head is going to have to come off to repair it. What a bummer !!!

All the best :D

I'm happy with the crane, don't think I would get it much cheaper, came in a 133 with VAT. http://www.sgs-engineering.com/sll500-load-leveller, that's coming too 8)

I don't think I could have got the m30 out of the e34 without a LL, let alone into the smaller e30 bay!

I know what you mean about the oil leaks mate, I have all manner of seals and gaskets that need doing too, the sump for starters, but also the gearbox seals (which I've done), and the head gasket. On my engine I can find the leaks easy enough, just feel where the previous owner put silicon sealant

I hope they bring in some £££ too then I'll order the Elring M30 gasket set and head bolts from ECP and do it all at once.

Small update with the conversion,
I’ve been out of work for a few months so have had to put this project on hold. Still very much motivated to crack on however progress has been limited to collecting scrap when the odd bargain pops up.
I started my new job on Monday so I can get back on with this
So I have some new bits
E28 525E diff, it’s the 188 medium case but in a nice tall ratio. 3.07, but I believe they also came in a 2.93. It is long but I want to be able to cruise on the M-way and it gives me scope for further power hikes in the future (thanks job!) Obviously the backplate and flanges are not compatible so a cheap 3.64 welder was purchased for the swap over.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
And the donor diff
Image
I also picked up an e36 rack, and a corsa linkage. On the close up you can see the masterspline which will need to be filed down to allow fitment. This is mentioned in the wiki but not shown.
Image
Image
Image
Also got some 51mm front legs and thicker anti roll bars
Image
Still need to measure the bar.

Will be on the hunt for the rear disc trailing arms as well, I'm making sure this thing can turn and stop before the M30 goes in.

Nice work mate, that diff will be great with the M30, you should be able to hit 100mph in 3rd gear with that. You will enjoy that very much

Tonights peadoing involved a quick refurb of the anti-roll bar. It was from a 318i touring and the wiki is unclear on the standard touring sizes. I couldn't get a 19mm spanner around it so that means that it must fall into the 20mm or 21mm category (325i or 325ic). Adjustable wrench and tape measure would clear it up for definite.

Image

Whatever the case, this should be a significant improvement on the standard 320iSE bar.

Started out in terrible shape

Image

Image

Some sanding...

Image

little splash of this...

Image

leads to this

Image

Need some new drop links as mine are ruined, will probably go mondeo as a slight upgrade

Continuing with the 'restoration' theme I cleaned up the hybrid diff today. She still needs a bush and a new backplate gasket but the hard work is done.

Looking rusty

Wire brush

A generous application of hammerite

Cleaned up the bolts with white spirit and wire wheel drill attachment

Refreshed back plate on

Bolts back together with plenty of copper grease

All Done

Ready for M30 power

Next thing to do is acquire a disc rear beam and a 63l fuel tank which will be subject to the same treatment.

Just back from the 'yard with a few bits.

Getting the trailing arms off under the car was one hell of a job.

Also picked up this for fun when the car is complete

Had a go at this corsa steering rack mod today. Corsa linkage cost £6 in the 'yard and there is no shortage of them. In case anyone else is thinking of doing this I'll jot down the steps as the wiki leaves a little to the imagination.

1. I used a hack saw to remove the corsa universal joint. This is the non-splined end that we are discarding. The metal is fairly soft and easy to hack saw through.

Image

Be careful not to saw through the bearing shells (why I used a saw not a grinder)

Image

2. Repeat on the opposite side, leaving you with this

Image

A quick tug and it should come apart

Image

Leaving you with this (keep)

Image

and this (discard)

Image

Put the corsa linkage to one side for a moment and turn your attention to the bmw linkage. I used an e36 but it would be the same if you were using your e30 linkage.

3. Use a grinder to lop off the upper part of the e30 linkage below the UJ. I did this to allow me better grinder access for the next step. The metal surround will just fall off allowing you to get in there with the cutting disc (this will become clear in the next pic)

Image

Now it's easy to see what needs to go

Image

4. Make two cuts as shown by the red arrows

Image

Probably best not to try and take a pic during, but sparks are cool!

Image

You're left with this

Image

A quick application of the lump hammer should break off any remaining metal

Image

Remember this will be hot hot hot, pliers not fingers

Image

5. Lock your UJ in a vice and punch out the bearings. Your'll probably find the little cylindrical rollers will fall out and get lost but it doesn't matter as we are using the ones from the corsa.
Be careful as this will still be hot from the grinding.

Image

Image

You will be left with

Image

6. Using a round file smooth off the guide holes. You want the corsa shells to fit in there snugly and not be too loose. I would file a little and test fit until you think it will just about squeeze in. Patience needed here.

Image

I added a little extra copper grease to the shell to help stop the rollers falling out during the next few steps.

Image

7. Insert the corsa linkage into the e30 upper UJ, push the shells in from the outside so they seat on the bearing.

Image

Like this

Image

You might need to use the punch to get them seated correctly both sides.

8. Take your punch and hit the aluminium surround hard to stop the bearing sliding out.

Image

Like this

Image

Four should be enough, make sure you do the other side as well

Image

9. Now its just that pesky master spline to file down and you're done.

Image

It feels very solid, quite pleased with the result, I will be trial fitting this set up soon.

Good write up on the linkage 8)
I was under the impression the bottom half of the linkage fit BMW racks?

Thanks Lee. It a square fit type, no good for my e36 rack but maybe later non-splined bmw racks. I'll post a pic of it tomorrow.

Me too! I've got a new job and moved, so getting a quote to get the car transported up to Malvern from Wales then there is a long list of things to do to get her roadworthy  before the install.

Whats this m52 buisness then Jimbo? Can you reveal yet

cool, I can't remember the name but there is a web site where you can submit the transport details and people bid for the job, mostly people tag it on a return journey or something so it's normally pretty cheap. Should be less than a £100 for your journey I would think.

M52 - not got it yet mate, it's going to need work though. Will be this years project

keep up the good work mate

Yes I am getting quotes from shiply, waiting for a guy to get back to me when he has another job in the same area to keep costs low.

Here is the pic of the linkage,

It sure was Jimbo, it's the wrong tank really (I have a facelift M20 car), but I don't have the readies for a brand spanking new ECP/GSF 63litre item. The wiki says they are interchangeable so I'll stick with this for now.

Fitted perfectly into the boot of my Xtype too!

Huge thanks to Byron (Maggspower) for transporting my car tonight, now I can get on with the project. Byron is a true gent and lovely guy to boot. We discovered a few choice 'modifications' to the car that I did not previously know about. I will add pics next week :)

As the weather dried up I got down to the car tonight. In the spirit of the zone I took some plenty of rust and bodge pics for you all to salivate over. Most of the pics are from the front end and I haven't inspected the rear suspension yet so there will be more horrors to come. Most will say it's not worth it, and while this is true I get some satisfaction out of de-councilling her 8O

Hmmm it's sterling on the outside but this looks suspiciously like lagoongrun. I've likely got a touring bonnet to match my suspension now winkeye.
