My car is a 1989 E32 735i - Does it have the above sensor? What does it look like? Where exactly is it located?
I'm wondering if my continued rough running is being caused by a slightly dirty CPS. I read a few posts on the M30 engine issue section here or the 5 series forum where some chap cleaned his and it made a huge difference to his vehicle.
Help for a beleagured E32 (and ex multiple E30 owner) much appreciated.

Yes you should have one and it is fitted at the front of the engine low down drivers side, it is bolted to the lower timing chain cover and the sensor "looks" at the front toothed vibration damper attached to the front of the crank. It should have a gap of 1mm between the face of the sensor and the teeth. It is probably covered in oil so a few mins work with a tooth brush and some white spirit will bring it up like new. I have a spare one which I know works perfect if you need one.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers Jimbom,
Found it, cleaned it and no difference - Would take the sensor off you but I'm now based in Sydney so bit of a pain to post

ok

worth giving the Idle control valve internals a good clean up also and I would check the TPS is fitted correctly that it just clicks when the butterfly is opened.

might be worth checking the rubber boot and vacuum hoses for any vacuum leaks.

there is a simple resistance check that can be done to test your blue temperature sensor that would be worth it also

hope you sort it
