Sure its not The bung fallen out the steering column? Allows noise to travel into the cabin. Also check the exhaust manifold and also where it meets the down pipes as a small leak will give a similar noise.
and if you are going to adjust the tapets make sure they are hot first.

It's deffo a valve on cylinder 6, when I open the oil cap I can see the cam lobe turning / rocker moving in time with the offending tap on the intake side. Is it normal for one valve to just come loose like that?
Was going to have a look at it today but instead rewired my stereo and speakers, fixed my sunroof, fog lights, fitted rear shock mounts and repainted all black trim on the car.. Will have a look tomorrow I think. Trying to get this turd done before cold weather gets here..
Cheers guys.!

When you take the steering wheel centre cap/horn off you should have a little rubber bung in the end (column is hollow)
Blob of blue tack works fine.

felt so proud, even tried it with a E30 325i and got put in my place..
No, there is just the 22mm nut there.! There should be a bung there? Anyone got a photo of this elusive bung?
Just been out to have a look, yeah the column is hollow, didn't realize that was enough to transmit noise. I've plugged it with some blutack.
Great tip lee.!

Ok so just did my valve adjustment.....
As a whole the engine feels much smoother to drive and the power delivery is also much smoother.
The valves were pretty tight, too tight to get the 0.30mm feeler in so I had to do them all.
Only thing is it now sounds more 'clacky' than it used to... shall I give it another check over?
Most folks on 'tinternet say .009" (0.23mm) on the cam side is the way to go as the cupping the the stem wear doesn't allow for an accurate reading on the stem side with a feeler... What you all say to that?

Ok so still wasn't happy with the engine tuneup, after driving round a bit the car didn't seem perky at all, and there was lots of ticking still.
I've readjusted them to .011" / 0.25mm from cold. It sounds great, like my m20b25 did which was very sweet. I guess my valve train must have a bit of wear.!
When the engine is cold is sounds great no tapping, smooth. When it's hot I have 1 valve that taps, I can only hear it from inside the car and not outside... Check clearances again when hot?
