Hi from Latvia. I am newbie in here but this seems to be one of the best knowledge sources on E30 M30B34 conversation.

I'm going to make project on BMW base with motivation: "Biggest straight six in a small car + turbo+megasquirt and with <2000 pound budget" and this leaded to BMW.

First thing to do is of course finding as much info as I can and I've been busy

So far I'm going to use M30B34 block from E28 + M30B35 head from E34 as this lowers comperssion (correct me if I'm wrong). There is still question about cam shafts as I don't know weather stock 260+ degee is ok on turbo or it is better to use wilder cam (might need some info on this). Turbo is still unknown. As far as I know engine block, rods, pistons can handle up to 550hp (correct me if I'm wrong). On injectors I'm going for skyline ones of if my budget alows - 600 - 680cc. Engine management is no problem: buy megasquirt solderable kit and tune it (yeah I know - it is not so easy ) Exhaust manifold - I can weld it on my own with no problems. I'm going to make digital model on solid works and test it for best flow before welding one.
Trany - I'm going to use manual from E34 with E28 fly wheel and here in Latvia are guys who can make me ceramic plates and attach them to stock clutch plate and this seems to be the best solution on LOW budget.

rear differential depends on the E30 base (318,320...)

The biggest question is drive shaft from trany to diff as I haven't found any conclusive info on witch drive shafts can be used? Please help on this one as I don't want to custom fabrication on this one.

The other question is engine mounts - do I have to fabricate or there is something that already fits?

This project is now on hold as I have to sell my previous project - Toyota Celica GT4 ST165. As soon as that happens - BMW there I come

Good luck with it. :thumb:

I do the mounts for the later E34 engine but ive recently found out they also fit certain E28 engines.
If you can get me a picture of the side of the engine block on the exhaust side ill be able to tell you if they fit or not.

Take the output flange from a e30 gearbox, put on it the E34 box and use standard propshaft. Simple :)

Ive done a similar conversion.

Lee - I believe there's a dipstick in the way of the mount on the e28 lumps, I cut a mount up to miss this so it is possible.

No not the one I have now. The e30 I did before (non turbo) used a e28 lump.

www.mye28.com is the best place for M30 turbo information.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

Should just be bolt on, slightly larger valves. Nothing to worry about I think.

Is it true that it also reduces CR?

Not as far as I know (but I could be wrong). The e28 bottom ends are lower comp anyway. Im using a M30B35 complete lump with 10psi and its lasting fine. Stock cam will also be fine, no point modifying if your on a budget.

Found info on m30b34+b35 head - it lowers compression considerably so it is way to go for turbo. Still hahing issues with money (havent sold my existing car), but I'm starting to consider going for twin turbo setup rather tahn one big ass turbocharger. That would give me less lag, cut expenses (small turbos ar cheaper and huge 2nd market with good items) and it is not that hard either...

two turbos won´t give less lag, assuming you have a specific power goal in mind.

Also small turbos ARE more expensive then a single turbo
