You can use a 172/173 ECU from an M20 320i/325i, the only difference is the eprom chip which can be available from the likes of Speedtouch on here.
Or put a post up in the wanted section for an M30 ECU.

The proper one is a 179 ECU, as fitted to later 535i/635i/735i models. However, as Lee says, any later 6-pot ECU will work if you fit the correct chip.

The earlier M30B35 used a 150 Motronic 1.1 ECU. A 179 will usually work in its place, at least, it did on my E34 535iSE.

Not sure, Ben, though I'd imagine you will need to modify the loom somewhat.

When I had it, it was fitted to a 325i Sport (Tech 2). For details on how to fit it, see Flappysocks' site:

Hi Maurice
I'm just wondering if I can get my hands on a M20b25 ecu, is it just a case of changing the chip and that will enable me to use it for the M30b35 with no other mods apart from the ones made to the loom?

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

As said above, any later 6-pot ECU will work, so long as you install an M30B35 chip. So you could use an 0 261 200 172/173/380/381.

The label should be on the lid of the ECU. For examples of this, see magpie's recent thread:
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... 54&start=0

If you need an M30B35 chip, I can provide either a standard or uprated one.

As regards Loom mods, check out the Sticky guide to it here:

Regards,
