Hey guys,

I’m an E30 newbie who’s looking to do the M20 engine swap from my 1991 318i Cabriolet.

I’m pretty much a novice when it comes to mechanical work but I can get by, my dad (ex mechanic) is going to be available to help too.

Could anyone who’s done the procedure share their experiences, troubles and how long it took them? Also, if it was worthwhile in the end.

Many thanks!

Further to the above post... does anyone know how much an m20b25 + transmission + ancillaries cost?

They are getting harder to find now, Depending on your reasons for swapping and appreciate not the easiest thing to do but try and get a drive in a 325i. They aren't particularly quick by modern standards. I should hate for you to go through all the work and be a bit underwhelmed.

I’ve just seen an engine + transmission for under £1000, so I may make a move . I currently have an m40 318i engine in my car, so i wouldn’t mind an extra 50+ BHP from the M20 2.5L, along with the smoothness and exhaust note. I may also drop a small tune/chip on the car for 10-15 BHP. I intend to keep the car long term, and with potentially 2 more months off work... I have some time on my hands to get it done.
