ive just dropped the sump from my e30 320i 1985.
as I was removing the oil pan I heard something drop inside I then unbolted the oil pump from the engine so I could fully remove the sump and the drive shaft for the oil pump was floating around in the sump.
so is it possible for the shaft to fall out while oil pump is still bolted securely?, I did find reminance of what looks to be 2x plastic washer in the oil pickup also which I belive the pump shaft usualy has one or 2 on it im unsure of that. If the shaft cannot fall out without unbolting the pump i drove this car last about 3 weeks ago about 100km up a steep hill also if the pump wasnt pumping should i expect the engine to last that long without grenading? and the sump appears to not have been touched in a long time. any help appreciated, and is there an alignment for re assembling the pump?

thankyou
