Something in the deep recesses of my mind thinks it's probably something to do with the oil channel in the middle of the bearings. There's a version where the groove is in both shells, and a version where one shell is grooved, and the other plain.
May be total rubbish, of course.

Bingo. Can't remember what the specific applications are but yes.
This was a running change from 360 to 180 oiling iirc.

There is also as above single and double tang bearings, single tang bearings should fit all blocks though.

They are? been a while since I looked but the double tang block I have certainly would happily accept either bearing.

edit - having just relooked your right they are different sizes.

At the risk of starting a riot there is nothing to stop you removing one of the tangs and running them in a single tang block.

The tangs are to help alignment.
The crush of the bearing into the bore should be what actually does the job of preventing the rotation, if you need the tangs to stop you spinning a bearing then the housing is out of spec anyway.

Modern cracked cap mains and rods actually don't have tangs at all (mostly due to manufacturing difficulty) and just rely on good tolerances.

Personal opinion, your better off knocking a tang off the correct lower half than changing the oiling dynamics by running two tops.

Edit to the edit - Just remembered why they stopped the 360 oiling, it was a done thing in the 60s believed to help oiling by subsequent research proved that it can actually limit oil flow and hurt the flow/pressure to the rod bearings.
It also takes away heat transfer area and seating area where the loadings are highest.

Not saying that is why BMW did it, just that the reason you don't often see it anymore across the whole industry.
