As title states just wondering what the oil temp is on average in a health engine. I've fitted gauges but not sure if the matched with the senders it reads just over 60'c, the guage goes to 170. Is this normal it has the oil cooler too.

My oil used to read between 90-100c depending how I was driving when warm.
That was with the sensor in the sump.

I assume that its an old VDO gauge out of an Audi. They were probably originally designed for use on air cooled engines and were adopted by Audi for the posy styling placebo effect.
M20s are cool running engines and run between 80-90c and on very rare occasions 100c. You need to have driven at least 10 miles to get them up to temperature.
The standard Audi/VW sensor is a dumpy little thing thats almost impossible to get into the oil flow, so just ends up messuring the local piece of metal that its screwed into, so airflow on the outside of the sensor has a major effect.
My experience is thats its very difficult finding the right spot for the sensor. Where have you placed yours?

It's in a t-piece in the oil px switch hole with px sender in the bottom. Thinking about your last post it is quite exposed to outside air temp and it's reading near enough 70 in that position so I guess it's working but need to rethink location.

You are not getting any flow past the sender in that location, so are just measuring the temp of the t-piece.
If your B25 is fitted with an oil cooler, then its pointless fitting the sender into the end of the big bolt attaching the filter head as you will only be measuring the temperature after its passed through the cooler.
If you ditch the cooler and filterhead, and use a sandwich plate you can at least get the sender close to the oil flow, but if you are using the dumpy Audi sender, then you are wasting your time.
I have tried all the locations including the sump plug and various manufactures gauges and have come to the conclusion that fitting an oil temperature gauge is a waste of time. You will never get it to work in a meaningful way.
Fitting the matching 0-5bar audi pressure gauge to your t-piece is another matter altogether and gives some useful feedback.
