Hi All

As you may have noticed from posts I have made in the past exhaust note/tone is a bit of an obsession of mine :o: I certainly don't own a 70's American car for the handling :D

But back to the E30; one thing that bugs me is that in up-rating the exhaust system and doing some head work it sounds fantastic on full chat, if a little clinical but pottering round it's lost that classic M20 sound. You can really hear the valves through the x pipe and middle box etc. It just sounds a bit clattery and rattly.

I am a real fan of deep rasp as appose to a sort of mono sound. A few examples;

So this got me thinking does my exhaust setup with the BTB and x pipe smooth out the flow too much for rasp?

Even though it wouldn't do the power output any favors would it make a big difference to replace the x pipe with two straight pipes? So it then becomes a true dual exhaust front to rear, I suppose effectively you then hear the sound of 2 x 3 cylinder engines out the back.

Finally could the stainless silencers be replaced with more old school cherry bomb type construction for example, to dampen mechanical noise i.e. valves and give more of a period sound track,

Or am I miles off? Interested to know your thoughts.

:D :D :D :D :D

I must say, my personal favorite is the second one, with the M20 stroker on that "private alpine course".

I have no idea how this sound is achieved. Why don't you drop them a mail or something?
I would suppose that two straight pipes as you suggest would make it sound more crisp...

Nice vids anyway, thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see a video of your car!
You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!!

Well I've gt a magnex 6 branch with a X-pipe & straight pipes to the back box on my sport & it's still got that rasp when it's running,

On idle it does sound like a yank v8 though, never noticed any valve train noise at all though.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

Thanks CarbTuner. If funds allow the E30 will be back out in the Spring. Current weapon of choice is a Toyota Aygo :o: Working in Oxford currently though so no point in anything else :(

Interesting; so you don't run a mid silencer Steve? I had considered that but volume wise the Fritz system is just about right with 0 drone so I don't want to push my luck too much. But that said I suppose a mid section is a quick an easy swap.

Suppose it's a bit like removing a resonator? for more of a crackly sound?
