hi guys. its time to rebuild my M20B28 after a valve head snaped and took the engine out last year July time.

This is the link of what had happened:

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&start=25

I have owned the car for about 5 years now and it started life as a 320i cab, with factory heated leather seats when i bought the car it had chopped front springs a fiberglass tech 2 kit. iv removed the crap kit and put on a genuine caby tech 2 kit which took me about 2 years to find, as i did not want coupe skirts.

on the first build, i did not get round to do a thread.

the things that ill be using:

Engine

M20B20 block freshly bored out to 84mm never had any pistons installed after it being bored :D (thanks to maggspower)
885 head (thanks to maggspower)
M30B35 injectors (thanks to maggspower)
290/290 newman cam (bought of a zoner)
all 12 new valves (ECP)
12 new Heavy Duty Rocker Arms (from vingate bmw source they are the same as Ireland engineering only bought them from vintage bmw source as they accept payment via PayPal unlike Ireland engineering who want card details).
12 new Febi Eccentrics
new OEM oil spray bar
Miller MAF
2.8 single vanos crank plus the spacer (bought of a zoner)
face lift M20B25 pistons
M20B20 rods
new main bearings (ECP)
new big end bearings (ECP)
new piston rings (thanks to maggspower who managed to get them for me)
new oil pump (ECP)
BBTB
full s/s exhaust from the manifold to the tail pipes
new OEM rod bolts
head bolts (ECP)
water pump (ECP)
thermostat (ECP)
all oil seals plus gaskets (ECP)
new engine rubber mounts (ECP)

there might be some items that i have missed out but in short everything is new apart from the crank, rods, and pistons.

gearbox

I'm going to keep the box that came with the car which is a 320i box.
ill be changing the shifter to a Z3 1.9 shiftier plus all the bushing and bearings. All the gearbox parts that iv bought are OEM.

things that iv already done.
GAZ coilovers all round
changed all the break pipes to copper and put on braided lines
all the bushes to poly apart from the diff mount bush
green stuff pads ( might upgrade to wilwood all round)

All the work that I have carried out can be proven.

I might have forgot something :? .

the head is complete, bottom block just needs the rods and pistons putting in plus the oil pump.

I'm also going to have a few things powder coated in chrome around the engine bay like the covers.
I'm also going to paint the rocker cover and inlet manifold but wont tell you lot the colour as I'm doing something different (well that's what I think) once they are done ill let you guys judge it.

sorry for all the boring things.

you should be fine with the 320i box, mine was

Not sure that the millar maf is going to really be the best solution for you though, any thoughts of remapping on the standard afm or even an M30 item?

Not aware of anyone really getting a MAF conversion right on an E30 yet, with the exception of Ant who regrettably is no longer trading...

Good to see the kitchen being put to good use :D

Everything's looking good. I'll keep an eye on this as I'm thinking about a stroker build for one of my M20s. Keep up the good work 8)

cost is nothing when it comes to a E30 and passion to work on a car. If you need to know it has cost me about 2.5 bags. But have saved ££££ as im doing all the work.

Is it worth the investment on a completely rebuilt engine, Chris?

Especially as a new oil pump has been installed.

After doing my post round walking for about 7 miles, got home and managed to put the piston rings on and got 5 pistons put in to the block. Would have done all 6 but ended up breaking one of the new piston rings on (the oil ring) now i need a oil ring, looks like shopping time for one set. Unless someone has one that they don't need

before building the bottom end i had test fitted the 2.5 piston in to the m20b20 block which has been bored out to 84mm

Image

it was all good :D

as it is a freshly bored block the honing marks are very good

Image

the bit of red that can be seen is the assembly lube which i had used to protect the block from rusting.

the pistons, new oem rod bolts, piston rings rod bearings

if i understood you right the deck hight should be standard as the block has not been decked, only the head had been skimmed

If the block hasn't been decked it should put the piston 0.5mm lower down the bore as standard rod is 135mm and crank is 75mm throw so 172.5mm rod and crank and new rod is 130 and crank is 84 so 172mm
