thoughts on the best camshaft to use when building a stroker with 2.7 M20 block, 320i head and 325i inlet/TB.
Cheers.

Depends on your objectives, Mark.
Was told that a 323i cam would give better low end speed, which is what I wanted
but would lose out on top end figures.
Mind you that was on a 2.8 stroker.
Post what you want from your engine then people will be able to give better advice mate.
Good luck.

Reggid beat me to it, and he's your man for this.

a 2.8L would improve a little over a 2.7L...........all the standard cams are much of a muchness i wouldnt waste my time between them, just get a mild cam aftermarket like schrick 272 with not much more duration than stock but more lift and an adjustable cam gear to set it advanced a bit.

I have tried both a stock 325 cam and a 323 cam.
325 item gave plenty of bottom end grunt, but was all done by 5000rpm,car regularly returned 36/38mpg.
323 item needs to be above 2000rpm and pulls to beyond the red line, car struggles to make 32mpg,despite a rolling road session and a bigger bore t/b.
Wish I had never sold on the 325 cam!

that's good to know Malc... any problem to fit the motronic distribution rotor on the 323 cam?

Non at all, just bolted up as intended.mark_i wrote:that's good to know Malc... any problem to fit the motronic distribution rotor on the 323 cam?
As a complete aside that may help others,I swapped the cam with the engine on the workshop floor with the head still in place.Only thing that I did was to wind the crank backwards a quarter turn after I had removed the belt to get all the pistons down the bores.

Bottom end torque is really nothing more than cubic inches, compression, combustion efficiency and valve timing. You want to maximize the dynamic compression.

From MANY hours of research and simulation the shrick 272 is pretty much the best all rounder due to a decent combination of lift, duration and valve acceleration.
In most stroker combinations it works well, undeniably not the optimum but a cam you just can't go wrong with.
It will give a good top end without making the engine a dog lower down, after all most stroker builders are looking for a "big 325" feel with more power everywhere than the 2.5 rather than an NA screamer and all its faults.

without a good bump in CR the 272 is as much as i would use but others might like a different compromise. dont forget that catcam, dbilas, enem, kent cams all make mild cams similar to the 272 to.
