So basicly got a 4.1 diff sitting on the floor of my garage and was considering welding it up and dropping it into my 325. The cars going to be used for drifting so I figured the short ratio could be fun :D Or will it just be so short that 1st and 2nd are rendered useless for most corners?

It will be short, but a 3.91 diff was an option for a 325i so it won't be too bad, whether the small case 4.1 can take the abuse is a different matter!

I had a 4.45 in my m20b28 and it was great on the track, ear plugs everywhere else though! Top speed was about 120 ish. It was a medium case one from an e34 and never gave me any bother. Torque ratings decrease as the ratio rises, i'm guessing because the teeth are getting physically smaller and thus weaker. I always thought 4.1 would have been the perfect diff for the 2.8 because it was so torquey.
